Death Becomes Us

Graveyard
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.Proverbs 14:12

God makes it crystal clear that individuals who are unrepentant and insist on a lifestyle of habitual sin will die a second death. Because Adam and Eve sinned, we are physically dying everyday. Death is just a part of life. However, when we take on a lifestyle of sin by our own volition, it kills us spiritually. The result is eternal separation from God.

Habitual sin leads to a hardened heart. As our heart hardens, we are no longer able to exhibit the fruit of the spirit in our lives; we are no longer sensitive to the voice of God or the ministry of the Holy Spirit; we carry burdens that Christ has already covered at the cross; and we lose the desire to accept the free gift of salvation. We become zombies, existing to execute the will of the devil instead of fulfilling the Great Commission, heeding God’s commandments and pursuing our ordained purpose. We were not created to please the flesh and be in bondage to our feelings and desires. We were created to worship, minister and please God.

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.Galatians 5:19-21

To sin is to live in fear and confusion. To sin is to forfeit love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness self-control and all of God’s promises for shame, guilt and misery. In transgressing against God, we give up freedom because falling for the devil’s ploys always comes with conditions and consequences. The ultimate consequence is death, but before that happens life will be miserable. Life might seem great, but with the devil it’s all smoke and mirrors.

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.Proverbs 6:16-19

To justify our actions, humans are great at finding loopholes and gray areas, a scheme of the devil to keep us in a cycle of sin selfishness. However, God has made it unequivocally clear what actions should be avoided by giving us examples over and over again.

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Death becomes us because sin is our default position. We are wired to transgress. While Christianity isn’t simply a list of dos and don’ts, every relationship needs boundaries. God has given us guidelines to make us aware of when we’ve moved further away from His will. In order for us to develop a healthy relationship with God and healthy relationships with each other, we need to abandon the plan of the enemy. Although we are hardwired to sin, Christ desires to work within us to rewire our hardware. He wants to reset our compromising patterns and bad habits so that He can be our default position and eternal life our reward.
