“My Weakness, His Strength” Fasting & Prayer Week

SIN topic at MYGEN Church

Fast from Sin

It is important to put on the armor of God before you get out of bed. This prepares the heart of those who pray on their knees before their feet hit the floor.Ebonie Jones
Within the body of Christ, there are many among us that are weak. They may be struggling with something, but don’t know how to turn to God to strengthen them in their weakness. We too may battle with various weaknesses that affect our lives, both in our spiritual walk and natural life. We create defense mechanisms that deflect attention from our weakness. These self-destructive behaviors make it harder for God to work on us, or shield us from communing with those whom He has already strengthened so they could minister to our particular weaknesses. Reality is, no one likes to talk about what their REAL weaknesses are. It requires transparency, honesty, and vulnerability with ourselves, others, and accountability partners.

For the entire week, we will fast from Sugar and Salt, and on Wednesday, we will fast from all food. This week’s fast will be broken down on Sabbath over Lunch. In addition to food, we will also fast from different kinds of weaknesses that are attacking our spiritual body. We will be fasting from the following:

  • Spiritual Weaknesses: Lack of desire to spend time with God, not meditating on His word as much or as in depth as you should.
  • Physical Weaknesses: Sickness, feeling unwell or unable to tackle your tasks.
  • Mental and Emotional Weaknesses: Negative Self-talk, Low Self Esteem, Feelings of Failure.
  • Suicide and Depression: Wanting to quit Life and/or abandon all responsibilities.
  • Sabbath at MYGEN Church: To make room for the Holy Spirit as we prepare to plan the next step for MyGen.

We will also be praying for those that are spiritually weak in the faith, as well as bringing our own weaknesses before God. God doesn’t desire for His children to be weak in any area of their lives. God has also called us to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. Whether our brothers and sisters in Christ have revealed their weaknesses to us or not, it is our Christian duty to bring them before God so that they may be made strong. Keep in mind that we are trying to get to the root cause of our weaknesses and not simply addressing the symptoms. Spiritual, physical, emotional and mental weakness are often linked: if our spiritual weakness is not dealt with, it will certainly manifest in the natural. For example, overeating is a physical weakness that is linked to the lack of temperance which is a spiritual weakness which might also be linked to low esteem as an emotional weakness.

To DO

  • On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sabbath, post this on your social media pages:
    Today, in addition to fasting from Sugar and Salt, I will be praying for myself and others who suffer from {{insert Daily topic here}}
    On Wednesday, post this:
Today, in addition to fasting from food, I will be praying for myself and others as we strengthen the dents in God’s armor.
  • Be honest in labeling your weaknesses before God. If you aren’t sure where you are weak, ask God. He will reveal them to you.
  • Find scriptures that will encourage you and others in spite of the identified weakness. Post them in plain view. Play worship music 24/7.
  • Ask God to heal your heart and mind from depressive and suicidal thoughts.
  • Get an accountability partner. Someone who is spiritually sound who will pull you out of your weak state and redirect you, your attention, energies and thoughts back to God.
  • “Clean house” and create distance or completely do away with any people, places or things that feed your weaknesses or suicidal and depressive thoughts.

Do Not

  • Allow the devil to make you to think that your weakness is greater than God’s strength.
  • Allow your weaknesses to keep you from serving God in any capacity in His church or the ministries He’s entrusted to your care.
  • Separate yourself from others or environments that encourage you to grow spiritually, mentally and emotionally. It may feel uncomfortable to seek help, but that discomfort comes from the demons tying you to your weaknesses. God wants you to do and be better.
  • Mislabel your weakness: call it what it is. Sugar coating the weakness, doesn’t help the situation and makes it harder for God to strengthen you in your weakness.

In addition to our Wednesday Prayer, we will pray every day of this week. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sabbath, we will pray at the following times: 6 am, 9:30 am, 1 pm, 5 pm and 9:30 pm.

On Wednesday, we will pray hourly as well as corporately at 9 PM. From 8 AM to 10 AM, we will pray for the spiritual and physical weaknesses of our Brother’s and Sisters in Christ. From 11 AM to 1 PM we will pray for our weaknesses. From 2 PM to 4 PM, we will pray for those that are mentally and emotionally weak. From 5 PM to 8 PM, we will pray for those suffering from suicide and depression.

All of these prayer calls happen in our Google Hangouts group. If you haven’t joined our Fasting Group on Hangouts you may do so by pressing the button below.

Verses for Meditation

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.Ephesians 6:12‭-‬13
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.Psalm 46:1-3
You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. Psalm 32:7-8
Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.James 5:16
Trust in the Lord forever, for in the Lord God you have an everlasting rock.Isaiah 26:4
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.Isaiah 41:10
The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.Psalm 9:9-10
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.Deuteronomy 31:8
About the Author

Hannah Love

While I am a born and raised Seventh-day Adventist (I was baptized at the age of 8, and then again at 21), I am not a product of Adventist Education. As a matter of fact, it is my public school education, both at DeWitt Clinton HS, and the University at Albany that has strengthened my relationship with. High School reignited my love for singing in choirs, and led me to join the Angelic Voices of Praise, the only gospel choir on campus. It was at corporate prayer before choir rehearsal one Thursday evening in Albany that my prayer life was brought under a microscope. You see, up until that point, I was praying these little Baby Prayers, the Patty Cake Prayers, the rehearsed Prayers, the One Liners. There wasn’t any conviction, and it almost appeared that I was afraid to talk to God in a very real way. That night a seasoned member saw something that I didn’t see in myself, and because she allowed the Holy Spirit to use her, took me to the back of the LC during corporate prayer and taught me how to pray. I mean Really Pray! That night not only changed my life, but changed my Prayer Life forever. My prayer life translated well as I served as a Pathfinder Leader and an Assistant AY Leader and Praise and Worship leader. It was my constant communication with God that allowed Him to use me to lead Teens and Young Adult closer to God, and many more into Praise and Worship. While I understand that our life experiences have differed, I believe that our God is the same. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He is the God that desires to have a deeper communication with us, who longs to chat with us, and craves quiet moments that we can offer as sacrifice to Him Do not for a moment think that I am perfect. In fact I am far from it. I mess up and mistakes, but my relationship with God is just as real as this letter you are reading. It is my relationship, and my prayer life, that restores me each and every time I fall. It is my prayer life with God that has allowed Him to use me for His work, and the furtherance of His Gospel! I charge each and everyone of you to explore a genuine and real relationship with God! Sit at His feet, talk to Him, worship him, Praise Him! Ask God to show Himself to you in a very “You Specific Way” Just in case you don’t know where to start, I encourage each and everyone of you who are able to join in with us on our Weekly Prayer and Fasts that meet each Wednesday. It is in these Fasts, that God reveals our character flaws to us, in hopes of not only correcting our Spiritual Cancers that seek to draw us away from God’s divine love, but pull us closer to the feet of Jesus! I pray that each and everyone of you experience God in a very real and “You Specific Way”. I Love you and God Loves you more!
