The Microwaved Christian
Uncle Ben’s 90 second rice, Cup of Noodle Soup, and Kraft Mac and Cheese, what do these foods all have in common? If you add water, or place in the microwave for a predetermined amount of time, you will have a meal. It’s not the most nutritious meal, but it will fill your belly and hopefully keep you satisfied until a better meal comes along. But how does this affect your overall physical health? It’s sodium, sugar and fat content is usually High, has minimal minerals and vitamins and if it’s your only form of nutrition, it can actually make you sick. How does this compare with our spiritual growth?
Today, from 12:00 AM to 11:59 pm, we will intentionally set out time throughout the day to spend with God. Maybe you will choose to dedicate your entire lunch hour to reading your Bible. Or maybe on your way to work and school, you will have an impromptu praise and worship session, and play your favorite worship songs while reading a chapter in your Bible? We plan events and pencil appointments in our planner for other things, but seem to forget to put God’s name in our planner. We treat time with God as a checklist: 5 minutes with God because you have so many other things to do ✔️ a quick devotional ✔️ The YouVersion verse of the day ✔️ A quick song before you go to bed ✔️ We spend time with our family and friends, while neglecting to make time (outside of Sabbath) to spend with the author and finisher of our faith. Microwaved meals are great every now and again, but just like microwaved meals have very little nutritional value, spending a minute here and there with God will have lasting detrimental effects on our Spiritual growth. It stunts our growth, and presents unrealistic expectations of how we expect God to move in our lives. A microwaved relationship with God causes us to expect God to answer our prayers in 90 seconds or less, and does not allow God to answer our prayers in His own time.
